A plethora of cultures. Two continents. Thousands of years of history... endless possibilities. On February 28th, students gathered to learn about the links between Africa and China. Teams also competed in Jeopardy to dissect current events in a fun and engaging way. The best dumplings in the Triangle, made by Chirba Chirba 吃吧吃吧, were also provided by CCN free of charge.
CCN teamed up for a premier debate by co-sponsoring the event with UNC's foremost debating and literary society, Di Phi. Di Phi is UNC's oldest student organization, founded in 1795.
Formal Topic: Is Chinese government censorship preferable to United States' secret monitoring? Students watched and participated as intellect, analogies, and logic were pitted against each other in a complex battle concerning the Chinese government's use of censorship. We were thrilled to host tables of lively, small-sided discussion about a number of intriguing issues regarding the Jimmy Kimmel controversy that led to waves of Chinese-Americans protesting the show. For example, what would you say to this question?
"In the protests outside ABC, what do you think individuals were trying to accomplish? Was there anything deeper besides a firing of Jimmy Kimmel and an apology by ABC?" Our discussion's range included reactions and appropriateness, what sincerity in apologies means, perceptions in media, and humor in different nations. Dumplings were served, courtesy of Chirba Chirba. |
